Environment variables

Server, worker, and web configuration reference.

These values are defined in .env.example and validated in the env packages.

Server and worker

Required:

DATABASE_URL
REDIS_URL
BETTER_AUTH_SECRET (minimum 32 chars)
BETTER_AUTH_URL (public URL of the API server)
CORS_ORIGIN (web app URL)

Optional:

RATE_LIMIT_EVENTS_PER_MINUTE (default 1000)
RATE_LIMIT_EVENTS_PER_HOUR (default 50000)
SMTP_HOST
SMTP_PORT
SMTP_USER
SMTP_PASSWORD
SMTP_FROM
SMTP_SECURE
PUBLIC_WEB_URL

Web app

VITE_SERVER_URL (API server base URL)

Docker defaults

Docker Compose provides defaults so you can run without a custom .env file:

DATABASE_URL=postgres://tryopentrace:postgres@postgres:5432/tryopentrace

BETTER_AUTH_URL=http://localhost:8080

Minimal local setup

If you only change one value, update BETTER_AUTH_SECRET to a random string.
